Introduction
This module is designed for first semester students taking technical courses at the polytechnic. In this course students will review, practise and internalize some essential points of three topics areas from the English For Technical Purposes syllabus. The three topic areas are Study Skills, Social English and Oral Communication Skills at the Workplace. It also develops their confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing by employing a range of communicative activities.
This module is designed for 27 contact hours. This includes assessments and class activities.
General Aims:
This module aims to:
- develop students’ confidence and fluency in English so as to enable them to function effectively in the workplace.
- enhance students’ general language proficiency.
- promote independent learning and self-monitoring.
- develop appropriate study skills.
Specific Objectives:
At the end of this module, students should be able to:
- use a dictionary as a reference in order to ascertain or confirm words and pronunciation, meaning, spelling and grammar effectively and independently.
- communicate outside the workplace in social situations related both to professional and private life.
- read, take and make notes from a text effectively and efficiently.
General Guide:
- This module consists of 9 units. All the units are compiled in the same booklet.
- The module code, unit number and page number are located at the top right hand corner of each page.
- Each unit contains:
- The learning objectives.
- Input – This may be in the form of reports, texts and language exponents, etc.
- Activity – This consists of task-based activities which will assist you in achieving
- objectives of the unit. Your lecturer will facilitate the activities and provide you
- feedback on your progress.
- Assessment – Different forms of assessments will be given to evaluate your
- understanding of each unit.
- Once you have successfully completed a unit and are confident with your achievement, you can then proceed to the next unit.
